french_horror
Hi everyone. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this. I recently made a community for fans of French horror films at [info]french_horror . Although I myself am a US resident, I have taken an interest in French cinema. Even though French horror films aremaking a resurgence nowadays, I haven't found any places to talk about it, so I made the community for people like discuss them. On a semi-related note: has anyone in France seen the new film Martyrs? It came out the other day. I've heard a lot of good things about it but I'll have to wait until the imported release comes to America.

the most boring entry in the world (in the area)
good news! i've settled down and am slowly making myself a life here. shit it is so awesome.

i've been exercising every day at this sweet-ass dog park across the street from my dorms. it's on a beautiful lake with a system of trails surrounding it and branching off all around it. the views are spectacular, and i can't even explain how much i enjoy watching other people's dogs go buck wild in the lake. people here love the dog toys called "chuck-its" which are big tennis ball ladles that help you launch balls super far. the dogs are all filthy and wet and smelly but whenever i can convince one to approach me i shower it with stranger love. ok i'm going to far here.

i've met so many people, most of them alaskans. everyone here takes this place for granted and it is very strange. i still haven't found some savvy newcomer to give me the dish, but i'm looking forward to it. i did meet one girl from hawaii who will be going through her first real winter with me.

i've already made some good friends. i met these girls eve and whitney at the student union on the first day of classes while having lunch and a two hour break between classes. i was scoping the scene for cool kids to sit with and i saw whitney's tattoos. 'they look alternative'.. "can i sit with you guys?". what a fortuitous meeting! they're totally my favorite people, they're really kind and inclusive and all that. they invited me to eve's house today and we rocked it and i met the boyfriend. i am so excited to be in on these girls lives i can't even explain it. they're really funny and smart. i don't even know what else to say.

i know enough people to never sit alone at meals. just a week ago i was freaking out about not having any friends. god, is that a relief.

also i haven't had my period in two months and it's freaking me out.

Sorry for another one of these posts, but I am leaving for Paris in about ONE day, and I've realized I still have a bunch I don't know.

I will be arriving at Charles de Gaulle in the morning and taking a taxi to the center of Paris. How long should this take and is it customary to tip cabbies for loading luggage and stuff? Also, my parents are really worried about my safety, as I will be a small girl with some heavy luggage. Is it worth it to take a bus, or should the taxi be okay?

Also, what is the emergency number in France?

And lastly, I will be part of the IES program, but aside from meeting other study abroad students, I'd like to meet some locals. Where's a good place to do that?

Merci beaucoup!

*Edit: Also, I've heard a lot of options regarding cell phones, but what is the most convenient (and cheapest, preferably, but convenience is more important) way to have a working cell phone there? (I have a motorola, AT&T, and it's currently set to roaming.)

I was just wondering, and as I can't get any info, nor do I speak Icelandic or have any relatives there:
I've seen in a few Icelandic news articles they often use this "Bjarkar Gudmundsdottir" when referring to her. Is Bjarkar, like, a pet name? Alexei = Alyosha, Ivana = Ivanchka. Ya dig? And isn't her daughters name got a Bjarkadottir in there somewhere or sommat?

PS. How fucking good is the outfit?

dearest, nearest, queerrest and weirdest.......................

jesus FUCKING christ.......

so today I attend one of my favourite irish cousins weddings, and i grit my teeth through the catholic blessings, cry myself to empathy via the love confessions they both confess and sware to each other. fierk and kitsy, i wish you both the hugest love forever, i had a slight homophpbic attack where after having a gun shaped fist held to my head, and being told someone wanted to kill me..... (seriously, since when was a pair of knee length socks and and a serious you want to kill me then i kill you first attitude became a bit too much to deal with.... i ended up kicking some shit in the head for literally stepping back thirty years in gay and feminist rights. I dont apppreciate some neandrathrall telling me i should be dead for being in a long term relationship with my beautiful husband.... i have to tell you, i have two albums coming out soon.... think, smashing pumpkins, kate bush, im going double, double, trouble, thats why im taking so long, one disk is heartbroken and in deep dispair, one is in deep dark joy dedicated to my new love, my old and forever love, william the conqueror, ok..... i better leave, my irish cousins are begging for a go on the intranet.... i just realised its been an age and a half since i communicated, the album has been in my blood for a year and much more.... the label think it will be a disaster, im sure, as it comes more from the bottom of my heart than even lycanthropy, about my fathers cancer, my solitude, my true love, my irish roots, everything that has touched me to the core in the last year.... ok, im rambling i must go.... i hAVE been told by my relative that i must go............... oh shut me the fuck up.............pw..xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx i love y'alllllll

Traveling to Paris and around Europe
I'm starting school in Paris in a week, and I'm packing right now. So some questions:

1) How much does it cost to develop film (35mm) in Paris? Any cheap places? Also any photo-specific store that sells good film (not just some generic kodak film) and how much does film usually cost?

2) I have an international phone that i will use abroad. But how much do SIM cards and pay-as-you-go usually cost? Someone told me today that its around $1 per minute...I hope this isn't accurate...

3) For those of you who have MacBooks with the built-in iSight-- Can I make videochat calls with people in the U.S (for free)? Or does Skype work for free? Any free video-chat programs?

4) I want to travel to the UK-- Bristol, Edinburgh, and/or London, Barcelona & Madrid, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Berlin-- What is the cheapest way to get around? By train (i heard they're pricy), plane, bus? Links would be useful

5) I'll be in Paris from September until the end of December-- what is the weather like? Does it snow? Should I bring lots of coats? Or is it bearable but just breezy like what Fall is supposed to be? I'm from New York, so is it just as cold?

6) Again, what are some absolute essentials that you think I should bring with me-- either to spare the high cost of purchasing things there or just for covenience's sake.

7) How dangerous is Paris? Obviously, it depends on the neighborhood, but what's the worse? Are their gangs patrolling the area at night? I want to get an accuarate insider's view on the area, because there are usually misconceptions. Like how everyone outside of New York City thinks the city is filled with crimes and the east village and lower east side are scary...like in the movie Taxi Driver...and really it's not like that anymore.

8) Pickpocketing-- I heard this is a problem? How cautious should I be?

That's it for now...Sorry for the long post. I'm leaving in two days and I want to pack appropriately.
Alors....meric beaucoup!

It’s Electric!
Hello! I am visiting France next spring and am suddenly wondering, “Am I going to be able to charge my digital camera and other devices?” What do I need to know about different electrical outlets and things like that? Any advice would be appreciated. Oh, I am American.

Merci!

Björk Fan Art on flickr.com!
The Björk Fan Art Group!

I created a flickr group for Björk Fan Art less than a week ago and it's been growing by the hour!

I would like to encourage you, my björkish fellows, to come check out this awesome assortment of artworks inspired by the awesomeness of Björk's music and image. And if you have some work of your own that you would like to share we would love to have you do so :-) All you have to do is join the group. Oh you may need a flickr/yahoo account to do so, but you should have one of those already anyway :P
